The Calatrava The Milwaukee Art Museum Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Background: In 1994, The Milwaukee Art Museum commissioned Santiago Calatrava to design a 58,000 square foot addition to the Museum.
Signature elements of the Calatrava design include the Reiman Bridge, a 250 foot long suspended pedestrian bridge that links downtown Milwaukee directly to the lakefront and the Museum.
The Burke Brise Soleil, the movable, wing like sun screen comprised of 72 steel fins, rests on top of the glass-enclosed reception hall and is raised and lowered to control both temperature and light in the structure. With fins ranging in length from 26 feet to 105 feet, the Brise Soleil wingspan spreads 217 feet at its widest point and weighs 90 tons.
Among the many maritime elements in the Calatrava's design are: movable steel louvers inspired by the wings of a bird, a cabled pedestrian bridge with soaring mast inspired by the form of a sailboat and a curving single-story galleria reminiscent of a wave.

ARTIST COMMENTARY
I've taken many pictures of the Calatrava in Milwaukee.
From the beginning I had in my mind that I
wanted an image that wasn't like the typical pictures you normally
see of this amazing structure. After clicking away from a number of different
vantage points on the grounds, I decided to walk across the street.
The image I wanted immediately began to materialize in my mind, a surreal looking
image of a "ship" coming out of the fog. After taking several more shots and letting the creative juices flow, I knew
what I would strive to create, and I knew it would have to be a black & white.
After several hours in the digital darkroom and several
days of creative thought, I finalized the image to what you see here.
A surreal picture of a ship coming to shore through the fog. I left the actual street light in the picture to add to the surrealism of the overall image.
The image is quite striking when printed on a satin photo paper, but even more so when printed on Polar Pearl Metallic paper.
It is one of my all time favorite images.
For pricing printed on pearl metallic paper and/or a framed (black metal) version of the image, send an email to info@jjcartisticphotography.com.
